Journey of a Roach – a fun game

Journey of a Roach is one of the game recently sponsored by Deadelic Entertainment, which seems to be in search of talent (they did the same thing with Gomo). However, this journey of a roach is not a classic adventure game, like we are used to Deadelic titles, but rather an exploration game with puzzles, plus some shy elements of platform. Powered by Koboldgames, it’s a game pretty weird, without dialogue and with some childish humor, characteristics that can be noticed from the story start.

To make a long story short, let me say you a couple of words: nuclear war, people have disappeared, the roaches dance on the table. Well, the dance in their own world (a bunker) which hasn’t been unaffected by the natural disaster. Through a sympathetic movie, the producers let us know that the two protagonists (Jim and Bud) got a little tired of the ugliness of post-apocalyptic world and go to seek the beauty that used to be.

But you see, the journey in such an environment is difficult, the bugs might be hard to kill, but they are small, weak and stupid, returning to the player to take them out of trouble. And so we have a lot of work to do. The control scheme is nice, the world from Journey of a Roach being built in three dimensions, and the roach, as we know it, can move on (almost) all surfaces. Floor, walls, ceiling, several obstacles deliberately placed by producers in their way. There weren’t many 3D adventure games successfully coping with the requirements coming from the fans of this genre, but Journey of a Roach does not give dragged down by statistics. I would even say that stands out. Inventory is classic and can be accessed using the scroll wheel.

The environment is impressively realized. The graphic contributes pretty much the atmosphere. The game has a unique aspect, sweet, but friendly, enough detailed to not give the impression of a low budget game. In fact, I would say that the artistic direction is perhaps the strength of the Journey of a Roach, the colors being chosen perfectly. Too bad that the sound is not so good. It has good times, but the music tends to be repetitive and the effects do not sound convincing enough.

Journey of a Roach is a game that does what it aims. It’s a fun experience, just a little bit amusing, with charming places and characters and relatively short (3-4 hours). But in big lines it is an amazing game to play when you are in the mood to play something different.
